Sketches of Central Asia (1868) is a travel memoir written by the Hungarian traveller Arminius Vámbéry, whose other writings include His Life and Adventures (1886), The Story of Hungary and co-authoring of the book The Voyages and Adventures of Ferdinand Mendez Pinto, the Portuguese.
His adventurous travel through the dreaded Turkoman desert eventually lead him to visit the cities of Khiva, Bokhara and Samarkand which were in the final year of their independence. Arminius provided a detailed study of these cities political and social relations of the rulers, and the customs and characters of the people. Later the readers are taken through the Arminius’ caravan life which went in persisting danger of exposure.
